For Diwali or Chhath travel, decide how late you can leave and what you will do if your ticket stays waitlisted. Keep the train number, boarding date, passenger names and PNR together. Avoid making a non-refundable onward booking until you are comfortable with the railway reservation status.
This guide covers reserved railway travel, especially e-tickets. Check your ticket and train category before cancelling.
Read GNWL, RLWL and PQWL correctly
Indian Railways' PNR enquiry identifies GNWL as General Wait List, RLWL as Remote Location Wait List and PQWL as Pooled Quota Wait List. Read each passenger's current status alongside the original booking status.
These are separate quotas with their own waiting lists, so passengers are confirmed from each list as seats in that quota free up.
Our practical conclusion: do not compare GNWL 10 and RLWL 5 as positions in one queue. Nor should a smaller number become your reason to promise relatives that you will arrive. Indian Railways describes its predictions as indicative; actual confirmation can differ.
RAC permits travel, but check your accommodation
RAC means Reservation Against Cancellation. IRCTC permits travel when the charted status is RAC. RAC passengers usually share a berth until one becomes free, so do not plan on an exclusive sleeping berth while your status remains RAC.
For an overnight journey, discuss this with everyone travelling, particularly anyone who needs comfortable sleeping arrangements. Decide whether RAC is acceptable before your cancellation deadline. Recheck every passenger rather than relying on one family member's status.
When are reservation charts prepared?
Do not rely on the old four-hour assumption. PIB's April 2026 explainer says reservation charts are now prepared 9 to 18 hours before departure. Check your PNR's charting status and ask railway enquiry about your particular train and boarding station.
A separate Ministry instruction on second charts specifies at least 30 minutes before scheduled or rescheduled departure, with booking available until that chart. Do not treat this as permission to use an automatically cancelled ticket. Set your own decision time early enough to arrange alternative transport without rushing.
Can a waitlisted e-ticket holder board?
If every passenger on an e-ticket remains waitlisted after chart preparation, IRCTC drops their names from the chart and cancels the ticket automatically. They cannot board; travelling on it is treated as travelling without a ticket. Refunds go electronically to the customer or agent account.
For ordinary railway tickets, IRCTC specifies clerkage deduction: ₹60 per passenger, plus applicable GST for AC classes. Do not expect an automatic refund to mean that every rupee paid returns.
A mixed PNR is different: confirmed/RAC passengers and waitlisted passengers remain on its chart under IRCTC's scheme. Do not assume the fully waitlisted automatic-refund rule covers that booking, or that everyone has a berth. Check the individual allocations before leaving.
Cancellation charges: use the 2026 windows
PIB's April 2026 explainer says the old 48/12/4-hour cancellation thresholds for confirmed tickets became 72/24/8 hours, with a 25% deduction between 72 and 24 hours, 50% between 24 and 8 hours and no refund inside 8 hours. Reading these updated windows alongside IRCTC's published flat-charge and minimum-charge structure gives this ordinary confirmed-ticket framework:
- More than 72 hours: applicable class-based flat cancellation deduction.
- 72 to 24 hours: 25% of fare, subject to the applicable minimum.
- 24 to eight hours: 50% of fare, subject to the applicable minimum.
- Less than eight hours: no ordinary cancellation refund.
Some IRCTC explanatory pages still display older timings. Do not use those to justify waiting until four hours before departure. Save the cancellation quote and receipt; if the deduction appears inconsistent, ask IRCTC to identify the rule applied to your train.
There are train-specific exceptions. The amendment effective 16 January 2026 sets Vande Bharat Sleeper deductions at 25% beyond 72 hours, 50% from 72 to eight hours, and no refund inside eight hours. IRCTC applies those provisions to reserved Amrit Bharat II tickets too.
RAC, mixed bookings and TDR
For ordinary RAC/waitlisted cancellations, the deadline is 30 minutes before scheduled departure. If your ticket becomes confirmed, confirmed-ticket cancellation provisions apply.
IRCTC's mixed-family-ticket provision allows fare refund less clerkage for everyone when nobody travels, provided the whole booking is cancelled or the applicable online TDR is filed by 30 minutes before scheduled departure. This specific provision does not extend the deadline for every confirmed ticket.
TDR means Ticket Deposit Receipt. The March 2026 announcement says e-ticket cancellation refunds are automatic without a separate TDR. However, IRCTC's published rules retain reason-based TDR procedures for other claims. Do not assume every disruption refund requires no action.
Under IRCTC's disruption provisions, a delay exceeding three hours at your boarding station requires a TDR before actual departure if you do not travel and seek full fare. Full train cancellation instead gives confirmed/RAC e-tickets automatic fare refund without cancellation or TDR.
IRCTC's filing guide directs users through My Account, My Transactions and File TDR, then the PNR, reason and affected passengers. Read the instructions and save the acknowledgement. Select the truthful reason; do not guess a convenient category. Keep screenshots and any supporting railway certificate.
Tatkal: prepare before the opening time
Tatkal opens one day before the train's originating-station journey date: 10 am for AC and 11 am for non-AC classes. Check that origin date carefully when boarding later along the route.
The Ministry's 11 June 2025 announcement introduced Aadhaar-authenticated online Tatkal booking from 1 July 2025 and Aadhaar OTP authentication from 15 July. Authorised agents cannot book opening-day Tatkal during 10-10:30 am for AC or 11-11:30 am for non-AC.
Check your login and authentication beforehand. Keep passenger details ready and choose a fallback train before booking opens. Avoid buying an unsuitable itinerary merely because it appears available.
Voluntary cancellation of confirmed Tatkal receives no refund. Waitlisted Tatkal cancellation and qualifying railway contingencies follow applicable railway refund provisions. Think carefully before buying Tatkal as a backup you already expect to cancel.
Check festival specials separately
The Ministry confirms that special services supplement regular trains during festivals including Diwali and Chhath. Treat a special as another itinerary to investigate, not a promise of available seats.
Check its exact number, operating date, boarding station, destination, stops, class and arrival day in official railway enquiry and the booking system. Read the fare and cancellation terms before payment. Compare the whole journey, including transport from an unfamiliar station. Treat a forwarded timetable as a prompt to verify the details.
Use VIKALP only if the alternatives suit you
Under IRCTC's VIKALP terms, opted-in passengers remaining fully waitlisted after charting may receive alternative accommodation; confirmation is not guaranteed. Alternatives depart between 30 minutes and 72 hours after the original train. Nearby stations may replace the original boarding or destination stations.
The terms provide for all passengers on a PNR to transfer together in the same class, or none. Fare differences are neither collected nor refunded. After allocation, travel on the alternative train; its booking status determines cancellation treatment.
Select only journeys you can use. Check the new date and stations, tell whoever is collecting you, and recheck your PNR after the alternative train's charting. Read our festive travel booking scams guide before paying anyone offering to arrange your journey.
Quick checklist
- I checked each passenger's current status and the charting status.
- I decided whether RAC accommodation suits the journey.
- I will not board using an automatically cancelled fully waitlisted e-ticket.
- I checked the correct train category and cancellation deadline.
- I saved the refund quote, receipt and any TDR acknowledgement.
- I checked Tatkal authentication and the train's originating date.
- I verified any festival special and can use every VIKALP option selected.
- I have a realistic fallback and have told my family when I will decide.
