The most useful first move is a clear, prompt report attached to the correct order. Describe what arrived, how it differs from what you ordered, and the remedy you want. Preserve the evidence before attempting repairs or sending the item anywhere. A persuasive complaint is specific enough for another person to check without guessing.
Separate the window, the remedy and the warranty
Write down three things: the deadline for raising the request, the offered remedy, and who handles a later warranty claim. Flipkart's official policy says the product-page terms take precedence over its general table and distinguishes refund, replacement and brand service routes. Do not treat a replacement-only listing as a promise of a refund for changing your mind.
For Amazon, its official customer-care FAQ describes eligible returns within the applicable window for damage, defects, missing parts or an item differing from its description, subject to exclusions. Then check the return terms shown for your own order under Your Orders on Amazon.in. The detailed category table was not retrievable during this review, so this guide does not assign a universal Amazon return period.
Treat a brand warranty as a separate promise whose coverage you must read. Ask who will inspect the item, whether repair or replacement is proposed, and what documents are needed. If the product was already wrong or damaged on arrival, keep that initial delivery complaint explicit instead of allowing it to become an unexplained request for routine servicing.
Record exactly what went wrong
Download the invoice and save the order details, delivery date and applicable return wording. Photograph the outer packaging, shipping label, product model and the issue itself. For a wrong item, show the received model alongside the order description. For missing parts, make a simple list based on the advertised contents and retain all packing material.
Describe a fault through observations rather than a diagnosis you cannot establish. “The display remains blank when I follow the supplied startup instructions” is more useful than guessing which internal component failed. Note any safe troubleshooting already attempted. Avoid dismantling, modifying or repeatedly testing an item that appears unsafe; ask for authorised inspection instructions.
Keep a single chronology. Record when the issue was reported, the ticket number, any promised visit and what happened afterwards. If support asks for material already supplied, resend the relevant file with the earlier reference. The aim is to make the disputed fact easy to identify, not to overwhelm the next agent with the entire conversation history.
Use an unboxing video as supporting evidence
Our practical suggestion is to record a continuous opening when appropriate: show the unopened parcel, visible seals, label and contents clearly. Keep the original recording and take still photographs of important details. Avoid filming unrelated people or publishing a label containing your address. If the video misses something, describe that honestly rather than reconstructing an opening as if it were original.
Follow installation instructions first. Flipkart requires its authorised personnel to open products covered by its installation process. Do not open such a carton solely to make a video. Treat recording as useful documentation, not a guaranteed entitlement to approval; if you have no video, still report the problem and provide the evidence you do have.
Start the Amazon request through official support
Open the affected order and look for its available return, replacement or product-support route. Amazon's customer-care FAQ directs eligible requests to the Online Returns Center within the window. If the displayed option does not fit a wrong or defective delivery, contact support rather than selecting an inaccurate reason.
Amazon's official India support guide explains how to sign in to Customer Service, choose the issue and use chat or request a callback. Use that route instead of a phone number posted by an unknown person. Ask support to record the actual condition, requested remedy and reporting date, then save the response.
If directed to a service centre, request the exact required document and an authorised contact. Ask whether the marketplace request remains open while inspection is arranged. If a replacement is offered, confirm the model, collection arrangements and next step if the replacement cannot be supplied. Do not send the item to an address supplied outside the verified support conversation.
Start the Flipkart request and check delivery conditions
Flipkart's official returns walkthrough starts in the Orders section with Return and allows progress tracking through My Orders. Its policy includes brand-specific service-centre replacement or repair routes and possible troubleshooting. Read the particular listing rather than applying another product's deadline.
For an Open Box Delivery, inspect the contents at acceptance. Flipkart states that after acceptance, its ordinary return route excludes issues other than manufacturing defects. Report a visibly wrong or damaged item during that inspection and follow the delivery instructions. This describes the platform process; it does not decide any disputed statutory claim.
If a pickup is missed, retain the scheduled date and ask support to record the failed attempt against the existing request. If the pickup agent refuses collection because the model differs, explain that receiving the wrong model is the complaint and ask support to correct the pickup instructions. Do not quietly change the complaint reason to make the screen advance.
Prepare the handover and track the outcome
Ask for a written list of items to return and the authorised collection method. Gather the product, accessories and documents requested. Photograph the condition and packed contents before handover, and keep the pickup acknowledgement. For a device containing personal information, preserve your evidence first, then follow the manufacturer's backup and reset instructions when safe and appropriate.
After collection, check the order status and the promised next event. For a refund, ask for the amount, destination and processing reference, then verify receipt through your own payment account. For a replacement, inspect the new delivery promptly. Keep the case open in your personal records until the promised outcome has actually occurred.
Seller and marketplace have distinct duties
Under rule 6(3) of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, marketplace sellers must not refuse takeback or refund for goods that are defective, deficient, spurious or not as advertised or agreed. Record the invoice seller and separately describe any marketplace handling failure. The responsible parties and appropriate relief depend on the facts.
The same official notification, rules 4(4), 4(5) and 6(4)(b), requires grievance officers for e-commerce entities and sellers, with acknowledgement within 48 hours and redress within one month. The platform must display its officer's details. Use those published details for escalation and retain proof of receipt. These duties do not mean every requested refund is automatically approved.
A date caution: the government's September 2026 announcement says the 2026 amendments take effect on 1 January 2027. Do not present those future provisions as already applicable to an October 2026 complaint.
Escalate a stalled complaint with a specific request
Send the grievance officer a short summary: order, seller, problem, first reporting date, supporting evidence and desired remedy. State the unresolved step plainly, such as inspection not scheduled or collection repeatedly missed. Ask for a written explanation if the request is declined. Preserve the answer rather than relying on a verbal assurance.
If unresolved, follow our National Consumer Helpline and consumer commission guide. NCH describes its role as pre-litigation redress; a further commission filing is a separate step. Include the support history and explain what remains outstanding.
Quick checklist
- Have I saved the item's policy, invoice and reporting deadline?
- Have I accurately distinguished a defect, wrong delivery and change of mind?
- Have I preserved photographs, packaging and any service report?
- Have I followed the applicable inspection and installation process?
- Do I have a ticket, pickup acknowledgement and promised next step?
- If stalled, have I sent a concise grievance with a specific remedy?
