Start your Diwali shopping plan with the problem you want to solve. Is a broken refrigerator disrupting the household, a laptop holding back coursework, or a phone simply looking less exciting than this year's launch? Give those purchases different priorities. The category notes below are practical buying judgements, not predictions about which product will become cheaper or endorsements of particular models.
What is confirmed about the 2026 sales?
Checked on 15 October 2026: Amazon's official festival announcement states that general access began on 8 October 2026 and labels the event live. Flipkart's official announcement gives 9 October 2026 as its general opening, with eligible early access on 8 October. These confirm that the events have started; the checked announcements do not establish a closing date for this guide. Confirm today's availability and terms directly with the retailer.
Give every category a buying condition
Use three headings on paper: buy when verified, investigate, and wait. Under each item, write the exact need, maximum affordable total, delivery deadline and unresolved question. Keep the calculation itself in our price-history guide, bank-card offer guide and no-cost EMI guide. Here, concentrate on whether the item deserves a place in your basket.
Make the buying condition specific: correct model, acceptable warranty, confirmed installation arrangements and an affordable checkout total. Do not substitute a bigger model merely because your first choice is unavailable. For anything that needs measuring, fitting or professional installation, finish that homework before choosing a delivery slot.
Phones: buy for the next period of use
List your actual frustrations: unreliable battery, inadequate storage, poor call experience or missing accessibility features. Then check the exact variant against the manufacturer's specifications. Ask about the remaining software-support commitment for that model, Indian warranty coverage, the nearest authorised service option and what comes in the box. Do not assume a similarly named imported variant has the same support arrangements.
Before choosing exchange, plan how you will back up photographs, move accounts and retain access to essential services. Keep the old phone until you understand the handover requirements. Ask for the exchange assessment conditions in writing. Our judgement: buying now is reasonable when a necessary replacement meets your checklist; waiting is reasonable when your current phone works and the upgrade has no clearly defined purpose.
Laptops: match the work before the badge
Write down the applications you must run and consult their publishers' system requirements. Check the full processor name, memory, storage, operating system and display specification against the manufacturer's page. Ask whether memory or storage upgrades are supported on the exact model rather than assuming that a product family shares one design. Include the keyboard, weight, ports and charger in your comparison.
For study or remote work, try to assess the keyboard and screen in person. Confirm warranty duration, service location and whether support is onsite or requires carrying the device somewhere. Ask whether included software is a continuing licence or a trial. Wait if you have not settled the required applications, or if the seller cannot resolve a specification mismatch. Buy when the machine fits a defined workload and you can test it promptly after delivery.
TVs: plan the room and installation
Measure the wall or furniture, the available width, socket locations and cable route. Check the stand dimensions as well as the screen size. List the devices and services you intend to use, then verify ports, app availability and accessibility features on the manufacturer's current documentation. Ask for a demonstration using ordinary content rather than relying solely on a showroom demonstration clip.
Request written details of installation, the wall mount, optional charges and responsibility for opening the carton. Flipkart's returns policy instructs buyers not to open packaging themselves where installation is provided by its service partners. Our judgement: wait if the room is unfinished or installation cannot be arranged sensibly; buy when the intended setup and inspection process are clear.
Large appliances: fit, service and energy use
For a refrigerator or washing machine, measure the doorway, lift, stairs and final position. Check the manufacturer's clearance requirements and the direction in which doors must open. For an air conditioner, obtain a site assessment and ask what the installation quotation includes. For every appliance, separate the product warranty from any longer component warranty, and ask which labour, transport or consumable charges are excluded.
Read the actual energy label. BEE's Standards and Labelling programme is intended to help consumers compare energy performance. Its label FAQ explains that labels include model information, a label period and performance figures measured under standard test conditions. Compare similar capacities and check the label period; do not treat a label's consumption figure as a guaranteed household bill.
Ask the seller for a readable label image if the listing hides it. Record installation and service questions beside the model number. Buying a necessary replacement is reasonable once these checks pass. Waiting is reasonable if the appliance still serves you and the proposed replacement mainly offers extra capacity you have not established a need for.
Small appliances: plan the task and the cleanup
For a mixer, air fryer, vacuum or coffee machine, write down the task, frequency of use and storage location. Check usable capacity, attachments, cleaning instructions and replacement-part availability in the manufacturer's documentation. Ask whether you can comfortably lift, empty and clean the appliance. Include any filters, bags or other recurring supplies in your budget planning.
Try a simple test of intent: describe where the appliance will live and when you will next use it. If you cannot answer, put it on the wait list. Buy when it replaces a recurring inconvenience and the maintenance suits you. Avoid purchasing several devices for the same task before you have used the first one.
Fashion: fit the occasion and the return terms
Measure a garment that already fits and compare those measurements with the listing's size chart. Check fabric, lining, care instructions and whether alterations would be needed. For footwear, consider the socks and occasion you intend to use it with. Save the selected size and colour alongside the order confirmation rather than relying on the product photograph alone.
Read the particular item's return and exchange conditions before removing tags or arranging alterations. Do not assume the option to exchange means you can obtain a refund instead. Our judgement: buy an outfit when it fills a real wardrobe gap and arrives with time to assess it; wait when the purchase depends on uncertain sizing or an event deadline you cannot comfortably meet.
Gifts: include the recipient in the decision
Ask about preferences discreetly where possible. For an appliance, confirm available space and willingness to maintain it. For clothing, establish measurements instead of guessing. For food, check ingredients, allergens, storage instructions and the stated use-by or best-before information. For vouchers, read the issuer's validity, eligible uses and refund conditions before choosing them.
Arrange access to the invoice and warranty information without unnecessarily sharing your account. Plan inspection soon after delivery instead of leaving an expensive gift boxed until the celebration. Wait when you are buying mainly to avoid appearing empty-handed; a smaller, suitable gift is a better target than an impressive object the recipient cannot use.
Quick checklist
- Have I named the need and a clear buying condition for this category?
- Have I checked the exact model, variant, size or capacity?
- Can I explain the warranty, service route and applicable return terms?
- Have I measured access and confirmed installation arrangements?
- Have I compared relevant BEE label details for the appliance?
- Can someone receive, inspect and test the purchase promptly?
- Would I still want it without the festive banner?
