Festive sales are when many people buy their phone, TV or washing machine for the year. The discounts can be real, but the pressure is high: countdown timers, limited stock banners and offers that change every few hours. This checklist helps you arrive prepared, so you buy what you planned at a fair price.

Before the sale: make a short list

Write down the two or three things you actually need, with the exact model or at least the specifications you want. A list turns a sale from browsing into checking. Add each item to your cart or wishlist a week before the sale starts and note today's price. That number is your reference point, not the crossed-out M.R.P.

  • Set a maximum budget for each item, including accessories you will need.
  • Note the model number, storage or capacity, and warranty you want.
  • Check whether an exchange offer is worth it for your old device.

During the sale: compare the final price

When the sale opens, compare the sale price with the price you noted, not with the M.R.P. Then check the same model on one or two other stores. A deal is real if the final amount you pay is clearly lower than what the product normally sells for. Our guide on spotting fake discounts covers the common tricks in more detail.

Read the bank offer and EMI terms

Bank and card offers often make the biggest difference, and they have the most conditions. Before you rely on one, check:

  • The minimum order value and the maximum discount (often capped).
  • Whether the discount is instant or credited later as cashback.
  • Whether it applies to EMI, and whether "no-cost EMI" still adds a processing fee or GST on interest.
  • Whether the offer is limited to one use per card or per account.

Check the seller and the return policy

On marketplaces, the same product can be sold by many sellers. Look at who is selling and who ships it. Prefer sellers with good ratings and a clear return or replacement window, especially for large appliances where installation and damage checks matter. For expensive electronics, keep the unboxing video until you are sure the product works.

Avoid the impulse buys

Most regret comes from items that were never on the list. Lightning deals and "only a few left" banners are designed to stop you comparing. If something catches your eye, add it to the wishlist and give yourself a day. A genuine deal on something you need usually comes back during the same sale season.

Quick checklist

  • Is this item on my list, within my budget?
  • Is the final price lower than the price I noted before the sale?
  • Do I meet every condition of the bank offer?
  • Is the seller well rated, with a clear return window?
  • Have I checked delivery, installation and warranty?
