Start with the room and the people using the television. Write down your usual programmes, seating positions, connected devices and installation constraints before comparing feature badges. This guide offers a practical decision process for Indian shoppers, with buying judgements distinguished from manufacturer specifications. It recommends no particular model and assumes no universal warranty or software-support period.
Measure the room before choosing the diagonal
Measure from your normal seated position to the proposed screen, then note the available width, stand depth, socket position and cable route. Mark the proposed screen outline on the wall with removable tape. Our advice is to check it from every regular seat, including side seats, and to prioritise comfortable subtitles and an unobstructed view over filling the wall.
Sony India's viewing-distance guidance gives a recommended minimum of 1.5 times the vertical screen height for 4K televisions, and three times the height for HD televisions. These are screen-height measurements, not diagonal measurements. Treat them as manufacturer guidance, then try your usual content at your actual distance; do not turn a minimum distance into a compulsory seating position.
Resolution and the programmes you actually watch
Samsung's resolution explainer identifies consumer 4K as 3840 by 2160 pixels, compared with 1920 by 1080 for Full HD. Its explanation of upscaling describes processing lower-resolution pictures for the screen. Our advice is to judge that processing with your own ordinary broadcasts and streams, rather than assume the resolution badge guarantees a pleasing picture.
Ask for a demonstration of a familiar programme, faces, subtitles and a darker scene. Try to compare televisions using similar picture settings. Our judgement is that resolution should serve your viewing needs: avoid sacrificing suitable dimensions, clear dialogue or documented service support just to obtain a larger number on the specification sheet.
LED, QLED, Mini LED and OLED
These labels describe different aspects of display construction. LG's technical explanation distinguishes LED-backlit LCD televisions from self-lighting OLED, and explains Mini LED backlighting. Samsung's display guide explains the quantum-dot and OLED distinction.
- LED: in conventional LED televisions, LEDs illuminate an LCD screen from behind.
- QLED: uses quantum dots with LED backlighting to produce colour; the name does not mean self-lighting OLED pixels.
- Mini LED: uses smaller backlight LEDs. With appropriately controlled dimming zones, this allows more precise brightness control; it remains an LCD design.
- OLED: individual pixels produce light, without a separate LCD backlight.
Our practical test is to watch the same dark scene and bright scene from your own seating angle. Look at reflections, shadow visibility and bright subtitles against dark backgrounds. Ask what backlighting and dimming system the exact size uses. Do not choose solely from a technology label or assume every screen size in a product family performs identically.
Refresh rate and motion processing
Sony's technical explanation of motion processing defines native refresh rate as images displayed per second, measured in Hz, and distinguishes it from processing that inserts frames or controls the backlight. Ask for the native rate, such as 60 Hz or 120 Hz, separately from a branded motion score.
For sport, compare a moving camera shot and scrolling text. For gaming, ask the seller to demonstrate the resolution and refresh rate supported by your intended connection. Our judgement is to prioritise confirmed input support when high-frame-rate gaming matters, while choosing ordinary viewing by the picture you prefer. Try motion processing both enabled and disabled before deciding.
Read the HDR formats and test the result
HDR concerns the range of brightness represented in the picture. Samsung's HDR explanation distinguishes HDR10's static metadata from HDR10+'s scene-dependent metadata. Sony's HDR compatibility guide lists HDR10, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) and Dolby Vision compatibility by model and source. Dolby explains that Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata to map images to the display's capabilities.
Check which formats your intended streaming apps, player and television share. Request a demonstration through the input or app you will actually use. Our advice is to inspect visible highlight and shadow detail rather than award points for the longest format list. Save the manufacturer's compatibility table alongside the model number, especially if a particular format is essential to you.
Choose software with a documented support promise
Try the home screen, remote, search, subtitles, accessibility settings and input switching. Check each essential app on the Indian version of the television. Ask separately about operating-system upgrades, security maintenance and app availability, and request the applicable model-specific support policy. Our judgement is to value clear written commitments above a salesperson's promise of lifetime updates.
For example, Samsung India's One UI Tizen page describes up to seven years of OS upgrades from the product's release year, subject to model and regional limits. LG's India brochure describes four webOS upgrades over five years for eligible televisions, with the preinstalled version as the starting point. Check eligibility; neither statement means every television gets a fresh support period on your purchase date.
Count usable ports, including the sound connection
HDMI's specification announcement includes 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate and automatic low-latency mode among HDMI 2.1 features. However, HDMI Licensing Administrator's buying guidance says to check which features a product and its ports actually support. Write down the capabilities of each socket, not just the HDMI version.
Reserve the appropriate connection for audio: HDMI eARC sends TV audio to compatible audio equipment and supports higher-bandwidth audio formats. Check compatibility across television, sound system and cable. Then count the remaining inputs for your set-top box, console and other devices. Check USB, Ethernet and any older connections you need against the manufacturer's manual.
Listen before adding a sound system
Test dialogue at the volume you normally use, from the farthest seat, with background noise similar to your home. Try any speech-enhancement setting. Our advice is to judge intelligibility rather than speaker wattage alone. If considering separate speakers, allow space for them, check remote-control convenience and confirm that their position will not obscure the screen or the television's controls.
Check the BEE label
BEE explains that its star scale runs from one to five in increasing energy efficiency. Its published UHD television label documentation shows annual energy consumption in kWh and a label period. That archived schedule explains the label structure; its old rating thresholds should not be applied as current rules.
Request a readable image of the actual TV label, match its model number and check its validity period. Compare similar screen sizes and the stated annual consumption as well as stars. Our advice is to use the label for comparison, not as a promise of your household bill. Do not confuse energy-efficiency stars with customer-review ratings or picture quality.
Agree installation and warranty before delivery
Ask who supplies the wall mount, whether the bracket suits the exact television and wall, and what labour, drilling, cable work or special fittings are included. Have the installer assess the location rather than selecting fixings yourself. Confirm appointment timing, ventilation clearances and who is responsible for unboxing. For tabletop use, check the footprint and stability of the supplied stand.
Flipkart's policy says not to open packaging yourself when its service partners provide installation. Arrange inspection accordingly and record damage or faults promptly. Our returns guide explains how to document a complaint. Do not assume delayed installation extends the order's reporting window; obtain written clarification.
Separate the whole-product warranty from any additional panel warranty: ask which parts, labour, transport and visits each includes, and whether registration is required. Samsung India's warranty page, for example, separates standard TV coverage from promotional terms and directs shoppers to specific offer conditions. Save the applicable document and invoice; do not assume an advertised panel extension covers every component.
Quick checklist
- Room, seating distance, stand or mount and cable access measured.
- Ordinary content, reflections, motion and dialogue tested.
- Native refresh rate, HDR compatibility and individual HDMI ports checked.
- Indian app availability, software policy and BEE label verified.
- Installer, included fittings, reporting deadlines and warranty scope documented.
Once these checks pass, browse Deals using our price-history guide. Review card-offer conditions and EMI terms separately. The Diwali buying plan helps schedule the purchase around a room and installation plan that are actually ready.
