Choose the purchase condition as carefully as the phone itself. Our budget smartphone guide covers specifications; this guide addresses the history, condition and support attached to the particular device being sold. The practical recommendations below are our buying judgement. Programme descriptions are attributed to official sources, with their limits stated rather than turned into universal promises.
What refurbished, open-box and new mean
Amazon India's Renewed programme explainer describes partially used or unused products inspected by qualified suppliers for working condition. It says original packaging may be absent. Refurbished therefore should not be read as a promise of factory-sealed stock or refurbishment by the phone manufacturer. Ask which organisation inspected your unit and what it actually checked.
There is a useful distinction in Amazon India's Recommerce terms: Grade A items relisted as Used Like-New are described as open-box, potentially looking and working like new, with original packaging and accessories; manufacturer warranty may be unavailable. The terms separately require eligibility for the Renewed programme. That definition belongs to this particular relisting programme, not every shop using the words open-box.
Flipkart's current returns policy has a separate refurbished category. That category alone should not be treated as proof that a particular phone is unused. For a purchase advertised as new, ask for that condition on the order, an invoice and confirmation of the applicable Indian manufacturer warranty. Resolve any discrepancy between the listing and the seller's description before paying.
Open-box stock is not Open Box Delivery
Flipkart's Open Box Delivery terms concern inspection when an order arrives. They provide for reporting a wrong or damaged product at acceptance and restrict subsequent return requests to manufacturing defects. This delivery process is separate from whether the listing sells new or refurbished stock. Save the listing's condition and delivery instructions separately, and inspect before completing acceptance.
Read the grade as a written specification
Ask the seller to translate its grade into observable details: permitted screen scratches, frame dents, back-cover wear, replaced components and included accessories. Request photographs of the actual unit where available. Do not accept a showroom photograph as an answer to a question about scratches. Put your own limits in writing before ordering, especially if visible wear would make the phone unsuitable as a gift.
The Grade A distinction in Amazon's India terms is programme-specific. Do not convert a seller's label such as excellent or good into an assumed battery percentage, untouched internals or manufacturer certification. We could not verify a current public Flipkart-wide cosmetic grading table. Obtain the grading definition attached to the actual offer instead of relying on old 2GUD descriptions.
Who will honour the warranty?
Amazon India's published Renewed explainer describes a minimum six-month seller-backed warranty, with repair, replacement or refund for defects within that period. This is an older programme explanation, checked again for this guide; confirm the current offer's warranty document before paying. It is not evidence that the original manufacturer will repair your purchase free of charge.
Write down the warrantor's legal name, support contact, start date and duration. Ask who pays shipping, whether service is local or courier-based, and whether battery deterioration, accessories and replaced parts are covered. Request the remedy if repair fails. If the seller claims manufacturer coverage, verify eligibility with the manufacturer's Indian support team using the device details. Do not count an unverified certification badge as an additional warranty.
Battery health and replacement history
For an iPhone, Apple's pre-owned buying checklist explains where supported devices show battery health and Parts and Service History. Apple notes that battery-health information may be unavailable for unknown or non-genuine batteries. Inspect the device's own information and relevant warnings; ask for an explanation of any replaced part.
For any phone, request a dated battery test, its measurement method and the seller's written acceptance threshold. We have not verified one battery-health minimum applying to every Indian refurbished programme, so do not assume a percentage from an overseas webpage. Ask whether a replacement battery was installed and by whom. Our advice is to test charging and ordinary use promptly, while preserving the reporting deadline and avoiding deliberately stressful tests.
Check the IMEI through Sanchar Saathi
The Department of Telecommunications' CEIR page on Sanchar Saathi explains Know Your Mobile, or KYM. Dial *#06# to display the IMEI, then use its web verification route or send KYM <15 digit IMEI number> by SMS to 14422. The service supplies identity details such as manufacturer and model; DoT advises avoiding devices reported as blacklisted, duplicate or already in use.
Compare the device identifiers with the invoice and packaging, and investigate any mismatch. Check each IMEI shown for the handset. Keep your evidence privately rather than posting identifiers publicly. Treat a satisfactory KYM result as one check in this process: our recommendation is still to inspect condition, warranty and account setup separately, rather than infer those from an identity lookup.
Clear old accounts before trusting the phone
Apple's Activation Lock guidance says not to take ownership while a device remains linked to the previous owner's account. Google's Android protection guidance explains that a protected device can require previous account credentials after a reset. Complete legitimate setup; do not accept a seller's promise that an account lock will disappear later.
If you encounter another person's photos, messages or accounts, stop exploring them. Record only the minimum evidence needed to report the condition, without copying private content. Ask the seller to resolve ownership or management restrictions through the proper process. Decline instructions to install an unofficial unlocking tool. Establish that setup works before transferring your main accounts and personal data.
Inspect delivery, then test promptly
- At delivery, compare the ordered variant, condition and accessories; photograph packaging damage and visible discrepancies. Follow the applicable inspection process.
- After permitted unboxing, examine the display, frame, camera glass, connectors and buttons under ordinary light. Keep packaging and the invoice.
- During setup, check identifiers, account access, charging, touch response, cameras, microphone, speakers, calls and connectivity. Record reproducible faults accurately.
- Report discrepancies through the order's official support route immediately; retain the ticket and instructions before arranging any repair or return.
Understand the return route before ordering
The Flipkart refurbished category currently states seven-day replacement only, with troubleshooting and referral to the warranty partner if a defect is not confirmed or diagnosed within seven days of delivery. Its policy also says the product page prevails where terms differ. Save that page. For Amazon, check the actual order's eligibility rather than treating warranty duration as a return window.
Use our defective-product returns guide for documenting a problem. Ask whether the proposed remedy is repair, replacement or refund, and obtain collection instructions in writing. Our red flags are refusal to identify the warrantor, inconsistent IMEIs, unresolved account locks and pressure to accept before the prescribed inspection.
When buying new is the better choice
Our judgement favours new stock when you need a straightforward gift, cannot spare time for condition disputes, or cannot obtain convincing ownership, battery and warranty evidence. Consider refurbished only when you understand and accept the documented condition. Before browsing Deals, use the price-history checklist; handle payment terms separately with our bank-card offers and no-cost EMI guides.
Quick checklist
- Condition and grade explained in writing; actual accessories confirmed.
- Identified warranty provider, coverage, service route and reporting deadline.
- Battery evidence and replacement history reviewed without assumed thresholds.
- IMEIs checked through Sanchar Saathi and matched to the purchase.
- Legitimate account setup completed; delivery and functional checks recorded.
